Choral Notes for the month of August

 

A Message from Larry:

 

Dear Chorus,

 

It’s been a long and very busy summer! I have a lot to share with you come first night, but for the moment I just want to reiterate some details about some of our upcoming programming and the music. 

 

As you can see, we are repeating two works from last November’s Time and Space Concert,  Vaughan Williams’ “Toward the Unknown Region” and William Grant Still’s “From a Lost Continent.” We will prioritize having copies at the first rehearsal for those who have not sung the work. A limited number will be available to those who need a replacement copy.

Many of you should still have the Lord Nelson Mass (also called Missa in Angustiis No. 11 in D) from our last performance  in 2007.  As it is a commonly performed work by choral groups and larger churches,  you may be able to borrow one from your church chorus if you’d rather not buy one. The score we used in 2007 ( Oxford U. Press) is fine as are most editions that are on the market We are ordering the Carus-Verlag edition (40.609/03) which is the cleanest and easiest to read. You can purchase one on the paypal link on the membership page for $17 or purchase one on opening night (cash for the exact amount or check only.)

SEPTEMBER 14th 

Opening night! First rehearsal! Complete details in next week’s Choral Notes.

*       You can preregister for 2015-2016 online. Dues as set by the board for this season are $100.

*       The fall schedule includes: “Holiday Pops” and “Voices Across the Centuries.” Let your section leader know asap if you have any conflicts. 

*       Music for “Voices Across the Centuries” will be handed out on opening night. For those who have not sung this music or are new members, the cost will be $22. This can be prepaid on PayPal or on opening night (check or cash for the exact amount only) Since many of you have some or all of the “Voices Across the Centuries Music,” there are PayPal links for the individual pieces.

*       Rehearsals for the Holiday Pops will begin in November. Holiday music will be distributed then. The cost for the Holiday Music is $9 (pre-pay using PayPal; check or cash for the exact amount in November.)

·     1.  December 13th, Sunday - Holiday Pops with The Moonlighter’s Orchestra –  at 3:00 PM at The Cary Arts Center

An encore performance of last year’s highly successful program of Holiday favorites with Cary’s premiere jazz ensemble. 

·     2.   January 17th, Sunday -   Voices Across the Centuries – at 3:00 PM with The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle at The Carolina Theatre.

o   William Grant Still – From a Lost Continent

§  Conductor – Lawrence Speakman

o   Josef Haydn – Lord Nelson Mass

§  Guest Conductor – Joseph Flummerfelt, Chorus Master, New York Philharmonic 

·      3.  April 23rd, Saturday -  The Deepness of the Blue – 7:30pm at Saint Francis United Methodist Church in Cary

o   Works in the African-American tradition for large and small groups. Choirs will perform a concert of music in the African-American tradition including “The Deepness of the Blue,” featuring text by Langston Hughes, and “Over Jordan” by William Averitt, as well as works by Moses Hogan, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie.
