A Message From Larry:

Dear Singers,

I hope you are having a great summer thus far and are getting some much
needed time for renewal. Our fall season is rapidly approaching! I am
writing to provide you with the fall schedule and some additional details
about changes to the Monday night routine. The schedule is attached, both as
a PDF and an excel docx. Please keep in mind that there may be some
revisions, so be sure to read the weekly Choral Notes. I have also attached
the performance schedule which I feel is filled with wonderful music making
opportunities.

Over the years it has become obvious that everyone's schedules are busier
than ever and having too many rehearsals in a short time frame is
impractical if not impossible. We will have some rehearsals on different
days, but I have tried to keep those to a minimum. In order to use our time
most efficiently, we will be utilizing some of our Monday evenings a bit
differently this year. The schedule is laid out in detail in the attachment;
the pattern looks like this:

7:00 - 7:50 - Chamber Choir rehearses in M10- across the hall from our
normal space in Marcus Dry.

7:45 - 8:45 - The full Symphonic Choir rehearses in Marcus Dry. The overlap
is intentional. Someone else will lead the warm ups while I finish with the
Chamber Choir.

8:50 - 9:30 - This will mostly be for the Symphonic Choir women to work on
the Holst Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda (this work is for women's chorus)

There are exceptions to this. Note that we will be at St. Paul's on 9/15 and
9/22. We will also vary from the above pattern on 10/13 due to the
unavailability of room M-10 that night.

I would like to respond to some questions that I have received about
membership in the Chamber Choir. Our reality is that most members find it
difficult to be available for every Chamber Choir event so we have
significantly more than 30 voices on our roster who have sung with our small
group. It is also helpful for me to have the flexibility of choosing voices
that are appropriate for a given program. Because of this, I cannot
guarantee a spot for everyone who is interested for all programs. Chamber
Choir is performing at three events this season and will be billed as such
in our programs so that people understand the size of the forces they will
hear perform. I will do my best to involve everyone who has demonstrated the
needed skills and has sung with the Chamber Choir in the past. The schedule
refers to the individual programs as opposed to being labeled as Chamber
Choir. Inquiries for availability will be out no later than August 1st. The
programs this year featuring The Chamber Choir are:

Sunday, November 9th - 3:00 PM - Sonic Boom

Saturday, December 20th - 7:30 PM - Handel's Messiah Part 1

Sunday, January 25th - Evening performance at our Winter Gala

The participation criteria is the same for Chorale. The Chorale concert is
the March 22nd concert at The Carolina Theatre, The Bach Magnificat, and
must be kept to 70 voices. The Pergolesi Stabat Mater, however, is Soprano,
Alto only and will be open to all Symphonic Choir women. Please note that we
are only doing one performance at The Carolina Theatre this year with no
Sunday morning rehearsal and a friendlier schedule than we have had the last
two years.

I would also like to address an issue that I have been struggling with since
our move to the Cary Arts Center, namely the space restrictions on stage and
in Marcus Dry. We have learned that we must provide seated risers for any
program that has us on stage for any significant time which limits us to 90
seats. Marcus Dry is a challenge for more than 100 singers. We are not
trying to turn anyone away, but it is possible that we may have to cap
participation on some programs. Unfortunately, this will have its most
significant effect on the women's sections. This season, the most likely
concert for that is the Time and Space concert on November 15th, due to the
large orchestra and limited floor space on stage. This will also have an
impact on auditions for new singers as we will be forced to be more
selective due to the space issue.

I am really excited about this new season and hope that you will be able to
join us!

Sincerely,

Larry

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is now open for the new season. PayPal buttons
have been posted for dues and sheet music costs which, we are happy to say,
are much less this year! Also: No one who auditioned last summer is
required to re-audition. For those who were not active this past season you
may set up a time to audition by registering at
http://concertsingers.org/auditions

Choral Notes will have reminders regarding Larry's letter at the appropriate
times.

Happy Summertime!
