FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 12, 2013

*TRAFFIC ALERT*
/Downtown roundabout construction and detour update/

Weather permitting, contractors working on behalf of the Town of Cary
will begin work on the eastern downtown roundabout located at the
intersections of E. Chatham Street and E. Durham Road on April 15, 2013.
During construction, the intersection will be closed and all traffic
will be detoured using Ward Street, E. Durham Road, Chapel Hill Road,
and SE Maynard Road; local businesses will remain open and local traffic
will be permitted on E. Chatham Street up to the construction area. This
traffic pattern will remain in effect for the duration of the project,
tentatively set for summer 2013.

Effective April 22, the current detour at the western roundabout--- W.
Chatham Street at Old Apex Road---will adjust as portions of the
roundabout are completed.
. Eastbound W. Chatham Street and Old Apex Road into Downtown Cary
will reopen and begin using the completed portion of the roundabout.
. Traffic headed westbound from Downtown Cary on Chatham Street
and to Old Apex Road will be detoured around the project along S Dixon
Avenue, W Park Street or Willow Street, W Chatham Street, and High House
Road.
. As more work is completed at the businesses' driveways, the
construction crews will open traffic to westbound Chatham St. and,
later, westbound Old Apex Road.
These detours will remain in effect through the end of May, weather
permitting, at which time the western roundabout is anticipated to be
completely open. For tips on how to safely navigate roundabouts, search

*Eastbound Cary Parkway Expected to Re-Open Sunday Evening; **Westbound
Lanes to Remain Closed Until Late Next Week*

*RALEIGH *--- /Eastbound lanes/ of Cary Parkway between Two Creeks
Road/Kilarney Road and Lake Pine Drive are expected to re-open on Sunday
evening, but the /westbound lanes will remain closed/ until late next
week, weather permitting. The road has been closed since April 1 for an
emergency repair project to replace a fire-damaged culvert under the
roadway.

The fire caused a 12-by-8-foot culvert to partially collapse under the
westbound lanes on March 27, forcing the immediate closure of that side
of the road. The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $482,120
emergency repair contract to Lane Construction Co. The eastbound lanes
were able to remain open immediately after the fire but were closed off
as well on April 1 to allow the contractor to safely do the repairs.

The road was dug up and the damaged culvert was removed, with a new pipe
installed. Work that remains to be done on the westbound lanes includes
repaving the road and restoring curbs and the median.

Access to the residential communities along Cary Parkway has remained
open during the project.

To get around the road closure, a signed detour will remain in effect,
directing drivers heading west on Cary Parkway to turn left on Kildaire
Farm Road, then right onto Tryon Road, which turns into U.S. 64.
Continue 1 1/2 miles and turn right onto Lake Pine Drive, which goes to
Cary Parkway.

Cary police have charged one person with intentionally setting the fire
that caused the damage.
