[New_csc_newsline] Fwd: Broadcast from Home - Chapter 7, Call for Singers, and more updates

Dear Concert Singers - today, I was privileged to have an intriguing
conversation with composer and singer Lisa Bielawa. One of her current
projects is an opportunity for singers to have a musical outlet during the
shutdown time. It is titled, BROADCAST FROM HOME. She publishes it in
chapters, each week, on her web site. You can check it out, here:
https://www.lisabielawa.net/broadcast-from-home

If you read below, you can find out how you can participate individually.
But, even more importantly, CONCERT SINGERS OF CARY will be a special guest
choir for chapter 10! What will this involve, you ask? The answer is, I
don't know exactly. What I can tell you is that on June 4, we will receive
some materials and instructions, and we will submit recordings by June 8.
All the tasks can be done individually, from your home. It will all be
things that we are capable of doing in that time frame.

I'll be in touch with more details as I know them, but please plan for June
4-8 to do this project, if you are able.

Be well,
Nathan

This week is about doing positive things for ourselves, even though the
world is a mess right now.
Dear Friends,

I wanted to reach out with updates about Broadcast from Home, my ongoing
compositional project in response to the COVID-19 crisis featuring
testimonies and voices from people submitting from anywhere in the world,
rolled out in weekly chapters. Today we are releasing Chapter 7: "Look Up
and Look Around."
Call for Singers

So many of us are saddened by the loss of choral singing in our lives - I
want to offer a way to bring us together.

Please join Gregory Purnhagen (tenor/bass) and me (soprano/alto) and almost
100 other singers from around the world in singing the libretto for Broadcast
from Home.

Just listen to the recordings and upload yourself singing as many (or as
few) of these Vocal Phrases as you like. No synchronization necessary! Just
sing as you like, in your home.
ADD YOUR VOICE

Call for Testimonies

Your testimonies are creating an incredible libretto for Broadcast from Home.
Archivist Claire Solomon and I have updated the prompts to reflect on our
new patchwork world of re-openings and quarantines.

How are you changing? What do you argue about? What do you feel differently
about every day? What does reopening mean to you? What will you choose now?

To our early submitters, you are encouraged to submit again! So much has
changed since we started this project.

Chapter 7: "Look Up and Look Around"

This week is about exhorting ourselves to do positive things for ourselves,
even though the world is a mess right now. Thank you as always to our
testimony submitters, instrumentalists, and singers, including new guests
Theo Bleckmann, Peter Stewart, and members from Fifth House Ensemble!

Updates about Broadcast from Home

The response to this project has been tremendous. Thanks so much to Kaufman
Music Center, which is Lead Partner, mixer/masterer Ben Young, my co-Sing
Leader Gregory Purnhagen, archivist Claire Solomon who has been updating
the prompts, and so many others who have been a part of this project.
We recently received this animation that was created for Chapter 2.
Professor Cynthia Flaxman Frank at UNC Charlotte worked with her students
in Advanced Typography to create this visual representation of the text,
which meditates on families’ experience of loss.

On Thursday, May 28 at 4pm Eastern, I am giving a free online seminar
presented by Next Fest Connects. Broadcast from Home has brought new
insights, skills, and values to my compositional practice, and I look
forward to sharing both the how and the why of creating this large-scale
participatory project, with detailed explanations of how it evolved and
what has been made and learned. Register here
