Bonjour!
Our final rehearsal for the MAF show, Sat May 4:
Debussy choir - call is 9:30am, rehearsal is from 10:00-11:30.
Mendelssohn choir - call is 12:40pm, rehearsal is scheduled from 1:00-2:15.
The Carolina Theatre: 309 W Morgan St, Durham, NC 27701 Here is a link
with parking info: http://www.carolinatheatre.org/visit/parking-0 You
are encouraged to carpool! Enter the theatre through the stage door off
Morgan St (along the side towards the rear, well past the front box office
and entrance). The stage door takes you directly into stage left – for the
rehearsal you can make your way to the near audience seating and await
instructions for coming on stage.
On show day Sunday, again enter thru the stage door, you can then go back
around the rear of the stage using the crossover to stage right – from
there you can access the large dressing rooms if you want to change there,
and to hang out. There’s also a small green room off the dressing rooms
hallway. Please keep yourselves out of the way of the stagehands as they
work. Nathan will instruct you where to go and at what time for a
pre-concert warmup (probably at the Donors’ Lounge behind one of the
balconies in the rear of the auditorium).

>From Nathan:
"Great rehearsal on Monday. Looking forward to Saturday. Please be prepared
to stand during the rehearsals. Debussy singers, please be reminded that
rehearsal will already have started when you arrive, so please enter
quietly.
For everyone: Call time for the 3:00 performance on Sunday will be 2:15.
A couple notes/musical reminders:
Debussy:
Excellent work
A couple diction reminders:
-in general, in French the letter "u" is pronounced as the mixed vowel
(very closed oo-shape with lips and "ee" shape with tongue). We still get
some saying "oo" when it should be the mixed vowel
-listen on your recordings to the pronunciations of "voix moins" (after REH
28). The two vowels are pronounced differently. "voix" is not nasal,
pronounced "vwah". "Moins" IS nasal, pronounced "mweh" with the eh being
nasalized.
REHEARSAL 4: remember the crescendo/decrescendo shaping of the first two
entrances
REHEARSAL 7: we got better at this entrance, 4th of REH. 7. It's a tricky
one, and the tempo moves. Perhaps give this one a listen on the recording
once or twice.
REHEARSAL 29: add the decrescendo two measures before REH 29
REHEARSAL 31: He is conducting this is 3 beats per measure, so the half
note gets the beat. You did a good job of adjusting to this...it is a
notable change. It also makes the word stress feel different. To accomplish
this, just remember that none of the syllables should be highly stressed.
Then remember:
-in measure 267, you enter with "ses" on beat 2
-in measure 269, you enter on "Elle" on the & of beat 2 (after beat 2)
-after REHEARSAL 32, make syllables all feel very even, "bien-" comes on
beat 2; "va-" comes off the beat, on the & of 2; and "les" comes on beat 2
Mendelssohn:
Mvt. 1: Maintain rise and fall of legato line. After "sf" don't go away too
much.
Mvt 4/7: Regal and majestic in opening. He takes a pretty brisk tempo at
the piu animato, so take care with final consonants"
