Music Notes from 4/22:

Debussy:

Great rehearsal and very good work on this piece, especially on page 4.

Here is a youtube recording. You can listen to the choir sections at the
following times. This is a GREAT way to practice your entrances, a couple
of which are tricky. It also gives you a much better sense of the whole
piece than the piano reduction.

4 before REHEARSAL 4: 3:20

REHEARSAL 7: 5:20

REHEARSAL 10: 7:00

REHEARSAL 28: 15:35

REHEARSAL 34: 19:05

You've done great work on this music, especially with the text. Please
review your text in each section before Monday, in rhythm either singing or
speaking. In particular, review page 4 and the measures after REHEARSAL 11.

Remind yourself in the 5th bar of REHEARSAL 7 and at REHEARSAL 31 that this
6/4 meter is not a slower tempo. We see those quarter notes and want to go
slower, but it is only 2 beats per measure. After rehearsal 7, the 6/4 is
exactly the same tempo as the 6/8 bar where we enter, the note values
simply change from the dotted quarter note getting the beat in the 6/8 to
the dotted half note getting the beat in the 6/4.

Remember that at REHEARSAL 32, it changes from hopeful to sad. In theory it
will go a touch slower, but be ready for whatever he wants to do there.
Your final ahs that you sing are sorrowful. The last words the narrator
sings on page 25 mean: "Then she threw her arms along the golden barrier,
and putting her face in her hands, wept." If you can, give the entire
ending a listen from 15:35 to the end. I can't listen to it without
shedding at least one tear.

Mendelssohn:

We are ready - great work on this.

Mvt. 1:

-very lovely shaping, we want this always in this movement, especially as
marked on the word "Hirsch"

-dynamic contrast, in measure 20 to piano following the tutti forte, and on
page 7

Mvt 3:

-be ready for whatever tempo he wants

-dynamic contrasts

-full tone in m. 53, especially altos, and he can then shape it how he wants

-rhythm in m. 57

Mvt. 4:

-TB full tone in opening, it sounds great, but never louder than beautiful

-no slide in measure 3

-make sure of placement of final Ts on Gott. If it doubt, leave it off

Mvt. 7:

-final Ts

-SA measures 80-88

-S entrance m. 129”
