> Bach Introduces Himself with "Magnificat"
> J.S. Bach's "Magnificat in D" was the first piece he delivered to the public after being appointed Director of Music at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1723. Despite this very demanding position, Bach composed some of his greatest music there.
>
> "Magnificat" is a musical setting of the biblical canticle, and features 5 soloists, a 5-part choir, and orchestra. The work is dense with musical imagery, and both achingly tender and startlingly powerful. Written in only six weeks, it was a wonderful introduction for the Leipzig audience to Bach’s potential.
