Dear Choir,
Sorry for the delay in getting these details to you. There was much to
coordinate on the scheduling side to insure that we keep our costs as low as
possible and to insure that the guest musicians who we wanted were
available. We were recently thrown a curve when David Cole, who will join
Allen at the piano for two selections, was asked to participate with The
North Carolina Boy Choir in Gov-elect McCrory's prayer service prior to his
inauguration this Saturday. We have successfully reworked the plan around
that commitment.
Our initial plan was to record only the holiday music but I felt strongly
that much of our November program should be recorded as well. The plan is
listed below. I tried to use one day for the November music and one for the
Holiday music but I could not make that work without adding an additional
session for the instrumentalists. Microphone placement also changes when you
do or do not have an instrumentalist which would eat up time in our
sessions. What I was able to do was schedule the November music first each
day so that those who did not sing the Holiday program could leave early. If
the situation is reversed and you did not sing the November program I will
need you there for the full time as we will not know exactly how long it
will take to record each selection.
The sessions are set up as follows:
Friday, January 4th 6:00 - 10:00 (St. Paul's Church Sanctuary)
Lo How a Rose/The Rose arr.
Craig Hella Johnson
Afro-American Fragments (Feet O Jesus) William Averrit
Still, Still, Still
arr. Gary Fry (We will use piano only)
Silent Night
arr. Roger Wagner (piano)
Christmas Song
arr. Audrey Snyder (IF we have time)
Saturday, January 5th (1:00 - 6:00 - note later start time)
1000 Beautiful Things
arr. Craig Hella Johnson (piano, percussion)
Let the River Run
arr. Craig Hella Johnson (piano, percussion)
I Saw Three Ships
arr. Mack Wilberg (4 hand piano, percussion)
White Christmas
arr. Roy Ringwald (4 hand piano, percussion)
Do You Hear What I Hear? arr.
Harry Simeone (piano, percussion)
You will notice that the full Afro-American Fragments is not on the list.
There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that Diana Thompson is
not available as she is performing in Atlanta this weekend. The second
reason, which is a good one, is that we have a live recording that is of
high enough quality that with some editing can be used on a CD, though I
would like another crack at The Feet O Jesus. Many thanks to David
Lindquist for using his equipment to make the recording and for making it
available for this purpose.
For those of you who have not been through a recording session like this,
please note the following:
. Wear comfortable shoes. We are hoping to use the "surround
sound" setup from the last rehearsals at St. Paul's to keep the standing to
a minimum but may need to rearrange everyone if that setup does not give us
the best recording.
. Stay attentive at all times.
. Bring water. No other drinks allowed in the Sanctuary of St.
Paul's.
. Have your music well organized in folders that minimize page
turn noise. This can really be a problem when recording.
. There will lots of gaps between takes, particularly early
Friday as we make adjustments to the setup. The fatigue will be more of a
factor from engaging and disengaging than from heavy use of the voice.
. Never give up on a take. It is amazing how a fragment of one
take can repair a rough spot in another in the editing process. The only
people authorized to stop are Vince, Jack and me.
. No foot tapping for obvious reasons J
Our session is being recorded by Jack Klotz

University in Philadelphia and Vince Leonard
<http://www.vinceleonard.com/vinceleonard.com/Welcome.html> of the Philly
Pops Orchestra. Many of you will recall that Vince has arranged and composed
pieces for some of our previous concerts, most notably, the Von Trapp
concert in 2010. You will be pleased to know that they are donating their
services for this project because of our support in performing and recording
some of their music. This saves us about $2500 in production costs for
recording, equipment rental, and editing.
I hope that you have all had a great and restful holiday season! I look
forward to hearing us ring in the new year!
Sincerely,
Larry
