*RALEIGH —* Permanent changes for the intersection of Western Boulevard,
Hillsborough Street and Jones Franklin Road in west Raleigh will begin
at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, weather permitting. The N.C. Department of
Transportation will close eastbound Hillsborough Street at that
intersection location so a contractor can begin removing the bridge over
Western Boulevard.

The work is the start of a $2.7 million project awarded to Fred Smith
Co. of Raleigh to tear down the bridge, eliminate the curved roadway at
that location, and re-align Hillsborough Street so it has a right-angle
intersection with Western Boulevard.

The 70-year-old bridge being demolished is considered functionally
obsolete and structurally deficient. It remains safe, but was not built
to current design standards and is unable to properly handle the volume
of traffic it now carries. It also requires continual maintenance and
needs to be replaced.

Drivers going east on Western Boulevard who had been using the bridge to
access Hillsborough Street will instead stay on Western Boulevard, then
turn left at Blue Ridge Road to get back to Hillsborough Street. The
detour will remain in effect until the new intersection is complete next
September.

Since these are busy commuter and commercial routes for the area, the
contractor will not be allowed to close lanes on either Western
Boulevard or Hillsborough Street during heavier traffic periods such as
rush hour while construction is under way. Lane closures will also not
be allowed during nearby special events at the State Fairgrounds, PNC
Arena, WakeMed Soccer Park and Carter-Finley Stadium.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information,
stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
