Dear Choir,
I am writing my annual summer letter with a tremendous level of excitement
about the vibrant concert season that we have in place to celebrate our 20th
year. If you haven't been already made aware of our plans, check out the
home page of our site at www.concertsingers.org
I have attached a copy of our schedule as a list in a Word document to this
email. We also have it available on the web it Google Calendar if you prefer
to access it that way. Please note that we begin rehearsals on August 9th .
The schedule includes dates for three ensembles which will perform the
following concerts:
Symphonic Choir
This is the original group that serves as the backbone of the organization
and will operate as it always has. They will perform in
Oct 23 - Americana with the Von Trapp Children and Raleigh Symphony under my
direction. These are the great grandchildren of the original group ages
15-21. This concert will mark CSCs first appearance on the Marvelous Music
Series sponsored by the Town of Cary and will include music by American
arrangers and composer. The interesting aspect of this program is that it is
an American program. The new generation of Von Trapps still sing music of a
folk style and yes, you will hear a couple of the well known selections, but
they live and grew up in the US so they are singing American Folk music.
Nov 26/27 - Holiday Pops. We will be joined by the Three Broadway Tenors.
We need all of you for this event. Rehearsals for Oct and Nov will overlap
so the fall concerts are linked as one commitment.
January 15 - Beethoven's 9th with The Durham Symphony led by Bill Curry at
the Armory in Durham.
May 29 - American Celebration with The Triangle Wind Ensemble
Chamber Choir
The Chamber Choir continues to grow artistically and will build on the work
of the last two seasons. Some of you have made inquiries about singing with
this group. Unless something changes it appears that we will not have any
openings for this coming year based on the response that I have received
from returning singers. The programs that they will sing are:
Dec. 3rd - Handel's Messiah Part 1 with orchestra at Louisburg College
February 26th - Music of Our Time featuring North Carolina Composers and the
premiere of Luminosity with Black Light dancers and instrumental ensemble
May 15th - Mozart and Salieri Requiems with The Chamber Orchestra of the
Triangle at the Carolina Theater. (Note that the Chamber Choir will form the
core of an 80 voice chorus called the CSC Chorale)
Concert Singers of Cary Chorale
When we received an invitation from The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle to
perform with them at the Carolina Theater we were faced with a stage that is
too small to fit over 100 singers plus orchestra. The Orchestra, who is
producing this concert requested a balanced group 75-80 singers as being a
realistic size to fit with 30 instrumentalists and appropriate to the style
of the period. This creates some unusual challenges for us in choosing the
group and scheduling rehearsals. I believe that this is a great opportunity
for us. The NC Symphony provides us with a professional level Pops program
but we rarely get the opportunity to perform Classical Lit with them. The
Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle is an all professional orchestra (Raleigh
and Durham Symphonies are Community Orchestras with a professional core)
which can give us the professional level opportunities on the Classical
side.
As stated above, the Chamber Choir will form the core of the Chorale which
will be about 38-40 singers. If you are not a Chamber Choir member and are
interested in signing with the Chorale, please contact Carleen Dubin at
919-461-3668 cdubin at nc.rr.com to schedule an audition, preferably on
Saturday, July 31st. You will not need to prepare anything. We will assign
you to a 15 minute block between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to rehearse with
6-12 other singers. Chamber Choir members do not need to do this. Any
singers auditioning for Chorale would automatically be candidates for any
Chamber Choir openings that may occur.
May 15th - Mozart and Salieri Requiems with The Chamber Orchestra of the
Triangle led by Lorenzo Muti at the Carolina Theater
Concert Singers of Cary News
We finished the 2009-2010 year in good financial shape, no small task in
this economy. For that we are eternally thankful to YOU who worked so hard
in every facet of the organization to make CSC a success. You may have heard
over the last couple of years that we were taking a hard look at our
branding and how we could better communicate who we are and why our
community should value what we do. We have moved to a new web design and
even considered a name change. When the process was all set and done we
discovered that we should affirm our identity as The Concert Singers of
Cary. Within the next couple of weeks you will see a new web layout, new
logo and a professionally designed season brochure. Many thanks to our
Executive Director Rich Hobson for guiding us through this process and many
thanks to Amanda Law and Shannon Giles and their crews for their amazing
work this year.
The town of Cary will be making note of our 20th anniversary at the October
concert and we hope to continue this celebration throughout the year. For
those of you who have been with us since the early years, I extend my thanks
and joy that we have had the opportunity to make glorious music these many
years and I look forward to the many years ahead. I hope that you are all
surviving the heat and getting some well needed R &R. I look forward to
seeing you on August 9th!
Sincerely,
Larry
